Alan Parsons Project
Alan Parsons heeft zijn sporen al verdiend als opnametechnicus en producer (zo produceerde hij Rebel van John Miles, Year of the cat en Time passages van Al Stewart), voordat hij besluit tot het maken van (concept)platen, die hij onder de naam Alan Parsons Project uitbrengt en waarbij Eric Woolfson de meeste nummers schrijft en ook regelmatig de zangpartij voor zijn rekening neemt. Voor ieder nieuw concept gaat Parsons op zoek naar geschikte muzikanten en vocalisten om vervolgens qua opnametechniek perfecte albums te maken. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat bij de introduktie van de cd de albums van Alan Parsons het vanwege het schitterende geluid erg goed doen. Tales of mystery and imagination uit 1976 is een muzikale bewerking van de verhalen van Edgar Allan Poe en is voor een debuut erg pretentieus. Het thema van I robot uit 1977 is science fiction; Pyramid uit 1978 klinkt commerciëler; Eve uit 1979 is degelijk. Met The turn of a friendly card, een conceptalbum over de gokker en zijn spel uit 1980, bereikt hij een groter publiek. Met Eye in the sky maakt Parsons een toegankelijk en succesvol album met prachtige nummers als old and wise, gezongen door Colin Blunstone, en eye in the sky. You don't believe is een single van de compilatie The best of the Alan Parsons Project uit 1983. Een jaar later verschijnt dit nummer ook als track op Ammonia avenue (1984). Met dit album en ook Vulture culture (1985) continueert hij het succes van Eye in the sky en worden don't answer me (gezongen door Eric Woolfson) en let's talk about me hits in Nederland. Op Stereotomy (1985) staat limelight, een schitterend door Gary Brooker gezongen lied. Met Gaudi, een conceptalbum over de Spaanse architekt Gaudi, sluit Alan Parsons de periode van Alan Parsons Project af. Onder zijn eigen naam maakt hij nog een aantal platen, Try anything once, On air, The time machine en A valid path, maar deze kunnen het publiek niet echt bekoren.
