De Britse zangeres Kate Bush krijgt de liefde voor muziek thuis met de paplepel ingegoten. Het is Pink Floyd-gitarist David Gilmour die de zangeres met het karakteristieke hoge stemgeluid ontdekt en met haar demo-tapes maakt. EMI onderkent haar talent en haar debuut-single wuthering heights (gebaseerd op de roman van Emiily Brontë uit 1847) stijgt naar grote hoogten. Het nummer klinkt anders dan popmuziek ooit heeft geklonken: fantasierijk, dromerig en met een aparte bijna richtingloze melodielijn. Kate Bush zelf lijkt een sprookjesfiguur, een vocale geestverschijning, betoverend, bijna behekst. Zowel haar muziek als haar voorkomen zijn volkomen authentiek. Het nummer wuthering heights verschijnt op het debuutalbum The kick inside uit 1978. Van hetzelfde album haalt ook het nummer the man with the child in his eyes een hitnotering. Kenmerkend voor de songs van Kate Bush is het scheppen van een mystieke en magische wereld, waarin droom en werkelijkheid in elkaar overgaan. .  Lionheart, eveneens uit 1978, ligt duidelijk in het verlengde van de eerste plaat. De singles hammer horror en wow worden hits. In 1979 haalt ze met een live-uitvoering van het op The kick inside verschenen nummer them heavy people - afkomstig van de ep On stage - de hitlijsten. In 1980 verschijnt dan Never for ever. De nummers babooshka, army dreamers en breathing worden als singles gelanceerd. In 1980 verschijnt ook de non-album track december will be magic again op single. The dreaming uit 1982 is een innovatief album vol geluidseffecten en met veel slagwerk, maar commercieel weinig succesvol. Als singles verschijnen sat in your lap, the dreaming, there goes a tenner en suspended in gaffa. Met Hounds of love uit 1985 heeft ze meer succes. Niet alleen het album, maar ook de singles running up that hill, cloudbusting, hounds of love en the big sky scoren goed. Door velen wordt dit album als een monument in de popmuziek beschouwd. Een jaar later zingt ze een duet met Peter Gabriel, don't give up, naar een hoge notering in de charts. Dit nummer verschijnt op het album So van Peter Gabriel. Het nieuwe nummer experiment IV verschijnt als single bij het verzamelalbum The whole story (1986). Dan blijft het enige jaren stil rond haar persoon en pas in 1989 verschijnt er een nieuw album The sensual world, met het voor de soundtrack van de film She's having a baby geschreven nummer this woman's work. Ook the sensual world en love and anger verschijnen als single. In 1991 werkt Kate Bush mee aan het tribute-album Two rooms, waarop songs van Elton John & Bernie Taupin door anderen worden vertolkt. Het levert haar met rocket man ook een single-succes op. In 1993 verschijnt het wanhopig modern klinkende The red shoes. Ook van dit album worden diverse singles gehaald, maar alleen Engeland loopt hiervoor warm. Dan lijkt het gedaan met de carrière van Kate Bush, totdat ze in 2005 onverwacht haar come-back maakt met de dubbel-cd Aerial. De single king of the mountain bereikt in Engeland de 4e plaats. Op dit album schiet Bush alle kanten op. Ze laveert tussen kunst en kitsch, tussen intimiteit en pathos, tussen opgezwollen en charmant. Op het album Director's cut (2011) heeft Kate Bush 11 tracks van haar albums The sensual world (1989) en The red shoes (1993) opnieuw onder handen genomen. Soms zijn de wijzigingen summier, dan weer zijn de nummers voorzien van een nieuw eigentijds geluid of spannend arrangement zoals in this woman's work. Vrijwel gelijktijdig met de opnamen van Director's cut neemt Kate Bush zeven nieuwe nummers op voor 50 words for snow, waaronder snowed in at wheeler street, een duet met Elton John. Het album zorgt voor een winterse betovering.
