Sting, wiens eigenlijke naam Gordon Summer is, wordt in 1951 geboren in een arme wijk van Newcastle. Hij is van jongsaf aan geïnteresseerd in live jazz- en progressieve rockmuziek. Hij treedt in diverse formaties op, maar wordt bekend als hij door Stewart Copeland overgehaald wordt om een trio te formeren onder de naam The Police. De groep maakte in de jaren van postpunk en new wave puntige popmuziek met invloeden uit reggae en ska. Vijf lp's lang bleef The Police bij elkaar. Sting wilde uiteindelijk meer artistieke vrijheid en ging daarom solo. In 1985 neemt hij zijn eerste studioalbum The dream of the blue turtles op, waarbij hij gebruik maakt van hooggeschoolde jazz-georiënteerde muzikanten. Het is volgens kenners één van de beste lp's van de 20e eeuw. Diverse singles worden van dit album gehaald, nl. if you love somebody set them free, love is the seventh wave, fortress around your heart, russians, moon over bourbon street en we work the black seam. Nadat Sting in 1986 een live-album op de markt brengt als weerslag van een wereldtournee (Bring on the night), komt in 1987 zijn 2e studioalbum Nothing like the sun uit. Hij bouwt verder aan het jazz-popgeluid. Hoewel de reacties van de pers wat gematigder zijn dan na het uitbrengen van The dream of the blue turtles, levert ook dit album de nodige hits op: we'll be together, englishman in New York, be still my beating heart, fragile en het monumentale they dance alone over de dwaze moeders. Daarna worstelt Sting met een writer's block en duurt het tot 1991 voordat zijn 3e album The soul cages verschijnt. Het is een sterk autobiografisch album met verwijzingen naar het leven in Newcastle en de dood van zijn ouders. Het is een sfeervolle plaat, met een afwisseling van gemakkelijk in het gehoor liggende nummers en loodzware stukken. Ook dit album levert weer enkele singles op: all this time, mad about you, the soul cages en why should i cry for you?. De opvolger Ten summoner's tales (1993) laat Sting van een wat vrolijker kant horen. De toegankelijke plaat slaat aan bij het grote publiek en diverse nummers zien als single het levenslicht: if i ever lose my faith in you, love is stronger than justice, seven days, fields of gold, shape of my heart, nothing 'bout me en she's too good for me. Een ander nummer van Ten summoner's tales nl. it's probably me wordt al een jaar eerder een hit in een andere uitvoering en met medewerking van Eric Clapton. In 1994 komt Sting met een verzamelalbum met daarop twee nieuwe nummers, nl. this cowboy song en when we dance. Na Ten summoner's tales duurt het weer drie jaar voordat een nieuw album verschijnt (Mercury falling), maar dat betekent niet dat Sting in de tussentijd stil zit. Mercury falling is geen vernieuwend album en krijgt ook niet zo'n beste recensies. Singles van dit album zijn: let your soul be your pilot, you still touch me, i was brought to my senses en i'm so happy i can't stop crying. Met zijn 7e en vrij luchtige album Brand new day uit 1999 levert Sting een van zijn betere platen af met prachtige nummers als after the rain has fallen, perfect love...gone wrong en de singles brand new day en desert rose. All this time uit 2001 is een live-album met nieuwe arrangementen van oude Sting-nummers en enkele nummers van The Police. Op de binnenhoes kunnen we lezen: "this album was recorded on september 11, 2001 and is respectfully dedicated to all those who lost their lives on that day." Vandaar dat heel toepasselijk als openingsnummer is gekozen voor fragile. Ook de opvolger Sacred love (2003), waarop Sting liefde en vrede predikt, klinkt geïnspireerd. Een opvallende single van dit album is het soulvolle whenever i say your name dat Sting samen met Mary j. Blige zingt. In 2006 verbaast Sting de popwereld door een album uit te brengen dat geen recensie krijgt onder de kop "pop", maar onder de categorie "klassiek". Hij vertolkt songs van luitmuzikant John Dowland (16e eeuw) op Songs from the Labyrinth. In 2007 komt er tamelijk onverwachts een reünie van The Police. If on a winter’s night (2009) is een album van Sting met bewerkingen van composities uit de barok en renaissance; met winterse traditionals en een paar eigen songs, prachtig begeleid door de akoestische gitaar, de harmonica en allerhande strijkers, zoals viool en cello. Op Symphonicities (2010) voorziet Sting twaalf stukken van The Police en zijn solocarrière van orkestrale arrangementen. Op The last ship uit 2013 werkt Sting samen met artiesten die hun roots in Noord-Oost Engeland hebben liggen. In 2016 verschijnt 57th & 9th, waarin Sting zich in sommige nummers weer eens waagt aan echte rockmuziek. Op The bridge uit 2021 wil Sting een brug slaan tussen verschillende werelden. Het album bevat verschllende stijlen die we herkennen uit eerder werk.
